Will twitter go out of business?

Cnet’s webaware recently had a post speculating about 11 companies that may go tits up due to the current economy.

Among the 11, were myspace and Twitter.

Personally, I won’t shed a tear if myspace goes. It is a cancer of the Internet. Unfortunately FOX is making too much cash by exploiting their idiot masses.

Twitter, whether you love it or hate, is the darling of our internets. Once used by social media mavens with unwarranted self importance, it is now exploited by Jet Blue and CNN!

99c Store Going Out of Business (by RodBegbie)

Could this happen to twitter??

I initially written off the site. I joined a year ago and tweeted this:

Just reserving my name here, this site is useless.

I pretty much dismissed the site and just registered it as placeholder. Then my brother continued to bug the hell out of me to use it and of course I’m really hooked. The site makes it easy to connect to friends and the API makes it adaptable for use on numerous platforms. In my case, I use twitteriffic on my Mac and iphone. With that ease of use I was able to connect to existing friends and made new ones.

The first thing many notice is that twitter does not have any ads running (except for the Japanese version) I often say to myself how can a company continue to run with out a visible business plan or any advertising. I think I may not be alone with these thoughts.

As the economy continues to worsen, venture capital funding is going to be difficult to acquire. The staff at twitter MUST find a way to monetize while keeping their user base happy. There should be subtle advertising before or after some tweets. Maybe they can sell ad space directly to twitterers wanted to promote blogs or their business. To satisfy the twitter addicts maybe there should be a Twitter “Pro” option with guaranteed uptime and special features.

The company should not wait for a sugar daddy in the valley to buy them out. They should focus on making money NOW before its too late.

Why I don’t even bother with YouTube anymore [BAWWW]

I wanted to go out quietly, but a certain playground full of trolls and slanderous information made me think otherwise.

For the sharp observer who’s been paying attention, I deleted my youtube videos AND my subscribers just a few days ago.

I am not sad at all, I’m actually pretty damn happy I finally did it.

I did NOT delete them because of the following:

Me being rejected for partnership for the fourth or fifth time. (I’ve lost count.)
I guess I was butthurt after the 1st rejection, but after knowing that no one makes any money from it anyway made me not care after the 2nd. I’m after opportunities that are better than $100 every other month, thank you very much!

Being chased off by a group of people who have absolutely no life.
There IS no “Victory”. I win for having a life. I get to move on with my life while some of my so called protagonists are still mentally disabled and/or unemployed. This is pointed to absolutely no one in particular, but I have to add that a certain few participants who are completely addicted to this site aren’t getting anywhere in life. Some of my friends included.

To all of those declaring victory I have a quote from the immortal Willy Wonka:

“You lose, good day sir!”

I DID delete my account for these reasons:

Making YouTube videos was a waste of time for me:

I’d rather do something (like writing for example) that is more productive than making a pointless vlog that only a few hundred people would watch anyway. While I was flattered to get SOME type of validation from those few hundreds, doing videos kind of felt like a chore to me.

While it was wonderful to voice my opinion, no matter what I said would be always misinterpreted. For instance at the Philly gathering recently someone AGAIN referred to the videos where I put 10 youtubers in their place as a hater video. I mentioned numerous times and I even made a video stating it was solely opinion and not hate. Of course people want to believe what they want to hear. Which leads to the next reason.

The fact that I dealt with tremendous stupidity:
Lets face it, YouTube is a site tailored those with ADD (myself included.) At least the trolls were creative…sometimes. Unfortunately it really makes my head spin to see comment after comment of illiteracy and poor grammar.

Not wanting to sound like an elitist, but most youtube viewer cannot comprehend complex topics. Of course I am solely judging this by how often people would not get my main points of a simple argument I presented. I blame text messaging and IM for damaging analytical skills for many young people.

Feeling out of place:
I also felt that I was in a place where too many children on the site running around unsupervised. If it wasn’t the sub4sub stupidity, it was them uploading copyright content or putting up total garbage.
I felt that at my age I could be doing something better.

It’s almost like being an adult on myspace, the number one landfill dump of the internets. Youtube is no doubt competing for that title as of right now.

Dealing with incompetence from the youtube staff:
Why would I waste time and bandwidth making videos when the staff clearly doesn’t care about me and countless others? Often I have tried to make a dialogue with the staff and point what was wrong. Despite that I got ignored numerous times. I understand them being overwhelmed with morons asking how to subscribe to videos, but they should at the very least speak to their content creators partner or not.

If it wasn’t the glitches, it was them who made countless “cheery” blog postings while being oblivious to several issues.

Despite the “Fail Whale” at least Twitter still addresses their issues head on and tries not to sugarcoat them.

I do have a feeling that Viacom is going to sue them to the point where people are going to flee the site. (Like Napster). I’m starting now before it gets even far worse than it is now.

I have higher priorities in my life:
I don’t have time to waste making vlogs. I am soon going to experience a major transition with my life. I will be done with school and on to establishing a career. Having a video of me cursing out marginal e-celebrities is definitely not the mark I want to leave on any future employers. While I STILL stand behind my words, It was only a matter of time before people in my private life began to notice. Knowing that made me a little freaked out.

That discovery would only hasten my decision.

Let me be perfectly clear: I am not ever planning on doing anymore videos on YouTube.com again.

You can quote that and tattoo it in your retinas. There will be no “comeback” like I did when Roger, The Boring Dispatcher passed away. I will not make videos on another channel. I will not pull a Greg Solomon and come back 2 years later.

I. AM. NOT. MAKING. ANYMORE. VIDEOS. FOR. THE. WEBSITE.

To make sure I don’t “comeback” I unsubscribed to all 694 of my subscribers. This will make this decision absolutely final.

I am not leaving youtube! I will still watch and comment videos on youtube just like 95% of the public. HAHAHA! DISREGARD THAT I SUCK COCKS. Account is closed for GOOD. I will be on stickam (or BlogTV if I can figure it out) so you can still see me. I will also be at 888 next month because its close to me and I still want to hang out with my friends (and other Toronto people as well, not just youtubers.) In fact I will go to future gatherings if they are within a reasonable distance for me. However, I will never fly out to one because there is really no point in doing so.

For the ADD crowd:
TL,DR. I did not leave because of  trolls or partnership rejection. I’m leaving because i’m tired of vlogging on YouTube. Its a waste of time, people in IRL started to notice and THAT freaked me out.

P.S. I have to approve all comments and plus I know your ip address if you do comment. Just some food for thought.

Thank you for your well wishes everyone, but its time for me to go.

"What music do you listen to?" *sigh* I listen to indie music…..

r. (by gisel h.)
For all intents and purposes I can considered a music snob. I do not like a vast majority of mainstream music. I am tired of the horseshit pushed on to the masses from outlets like MTV, the RIAA and Clear Channel.

I am a Indie music fan. I wasn’t always like this. There was actually a time and place when I believe Britney Spears was a credible artist (way before her crash and burn) not not a record company vehicle that was based more on her looks and not actual talent. I used listen to a ton of hip hop simply because its been expected for a young black man to do so.

For all intents and purposes I am not a hipster. I am not that anal or snobby. I hate PBR and I find Thrift Stores tacky as fuck. I am not super skinny as well, in fact i’m probably too fat for AA or Urban Outfitters clothes.

It sounds cheesy but one cold and depressing Buffalo winter day back in 2005 I had turned on to XM radio to a station called “The Verge” that had Canadian music (which I do not subscribe to anymore) and heard The Arcade Fire’s song “In the Backseat”. To this day it when I hear it it almost drives me to tears and it somewhat comforts me whenever I feel super depressed.

I began to find out more about them and similar bands across canada such as Broken Social Scene and Stars through places like BrooklynVegan, Pitchfork, DrownedinSound, NME and other place. Then I started to discover bands in this country like LCD soundsystem and in the UK like Bloc Party.

I would see many bands like them in person in Toronto and Buffalo over the next 3 years and I even joined an online community of “Indiefucks” (though they don’t really talk about indie music often and more about other things!).

Even though I have made some friends who listen to the same music as I do I still find it very difficult to even explain to the uninitiated about these bands or to simply find someone to accompany me to a show. My brother continues to tease me and calls me a hipster, which i’m far from it.

I can’t and don’t want to be an elitist about this music. I still think SOME (but not all) mainstream artist are talented in their own right (such as Kelly Clarkson) I am also not a poseur. I do care about the music deeply and I am not going to shows just to be seen,(like *sigh* Scenesters)

I don’t want to interject race into the matter, but I am a black indie rock fan. I simply don’t care about those who feel the need tell me that the music I am listening to is simply made for white people. Call me a sellout (its happened so many times for me not to care), but I can’t stand about 95% of today’s rap. Its lyrics passionate nor made of any substance for me to care about. Tupac and Biggie must be rolling in their graves knowing that total garbage is released today. It pisses me off that people are buying Lil’ Wayne or Mike Jones CDs.

I consider any hip-hop released past 1996(save for a few artists like Kayne West and Common) horrible. There is no creativity or passion in hip-hop anymore. Nas once said it perfectly, “Hip hop is dead”.

So the next time you ask me what I’m listening to, I’m listening to music that is not corrupted by payola scandals or by the RIAA. I’m listening to indie rock. If you think its “weird” or “funny” go fuck yourself. :)
